The Old Slaughterhouse Heritage and Arts Centre is the home of Escape Arts, we curate quarterly exhibitions, celebrating local people and local stories.
We are open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons 1:30-4:30pm.
The building is fully accessible for wheelchair users, mainly flat with a stairlift to allow for everyone to visit our upstairs gallery. Dogs friendly.
The Old Slaughterhouse is free to visit and enjoy and there is lots to see and do when you make your visit! Currently we have five exhibitions on display, which are often complimented by art installations completed by our community groups across the county. Visit What’s On for a complete programme of which exhibitions and talks will be on during your visit.
In addition to showcasing exhibitions, we also operate a themed heritage tearoom where we serve a selection of teas in vintage china, locally roasted coffee provided by Monsoon Coffee Estates and lovely homemade cake and biscuits provided by our volunteer bakers. View our current menu.
We try to theme our tea room to respond to the current exhibitions. It has been a 60s milkshake bar, rail carriage cafe and beautiful garden room. We even our own 70s Dynatron so you can play, we have a select range vinyl and cassettes!
With the recent addition of our ‘Cowshed’ a fantastic undercover outdoor garden and creative space there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy a cuppa away from the busy and crowded town.
Dogs are welcome and have their own special treats. Loyalty cards and membership discounts available.
We also operate a small shop on the premises, where we sell little souvenirs of Escape Arts merchandise alongside beautiful items by local professional artists. These include painter and felt artist Claire Brierley, needlefelt artist Stephanie Lester, designer Phil Williams, painter Claire Henley and textiles artist Rachel McCann.
Escape works with a a fantastic team of professional artists across its community art programme, it is these artisits we showcase within our little shop. Work included beautiful felted creatures, funky fab owl door stops, limited edition prints, our popular Henson’s pork pie bag and a range of local cards.
We also offer a range of gift vouchers from Afternoon Tea experiences and Gift Vouchers for our artist led evening and day workshops. These make ideal gifts for that special occasion.
We are located in the rear corner of The Yard, a service yard and car park in-between Sheep Street and Bridge Street.
We can be accessed via Sheep Street, with an entrance between Clinkards Shoe Shop and Wetherspoons Golden Bee Pub. Look for the Lost Garden mural. We are in the top left hand corner of The Yard.
From Bridge Street, we can be accessed via the Old Red Lion Court.
Take care when coming through the yard, it can get busy with delivery lorries and the site has multiple disabled parking spaces.
